Mariza (she/her) is a Filipina-American design strategist, who has built a career in design for public good.
Throughout my community college and undergrad years, I valued gaining real-world experience to put theory into practice. As a result, my work history includes an array of experiences—retail and service industry, arts administration, gallery operations, military ID administration, museum education, advertising, screenprint production, and environmental graphics—that have informed me how to serve my community as a creative professional. My design practice is influenced by UX research methodologies, human-centered design, and game theory, with a focus on creating engaging learning experiences through play.
In spring 2020, I transferred from Montgomery College with an A.A. in Art to the Maryland Institute College of Art to pursue a BFA in Graphic Design. Following graduation in May 2023, I joined Education Design Lab as the Associate Designer for Visual Design + Impact. Currently, I am a service designer with the Government of Washington DC, at the Office of the Chief Technology Officer.
In my spare time, I am a board member of AIGA DC. This year, I am the curriculum lead for SHINE, AIGA DC’s flagship mentorship program. We have a cohort of 22 mentees, with one to four years of experience, mentored by 22 DMV designers, with more than 5 years of professional experience.
When I’m not designing, I’m either at the gym, rock-climbing, or playing a boardgame. (My latest obsession is Wingspan.) Schedule a coffee chat with me!
